Totally missing the point…
“The reason Social Security is in big trouble is we don’t have enough workers to support all the retirees. Well, a third of all the young people in America are not in America today because of abortion, because one in three pregnancies end in abortion.”—
GOP presidential hopeful and sexual neologism RICK SANTORUM, as heard on WEZS radio (New Hampshire) and quoted on The Daily Show.
To which Jon Stewart responds “I guess you could then also make the argument that we wouldn’t be in this Social Security predicament in the first place if more Baby Boomers had just been aborted.”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA WHAT. ARE YOU SERIOUS. WHAT THE WHAT.

Yeah, that’s…not how it works. Head meet desk.
And to add my own two cents…
Two things really stand out to me about this: One, I admit to not knowing exactly what the current % of pregnancies that end in abortion today is, but thanks to the existence and availability of contraception, I know that it’s much, much lower than one-third. What is true is that one-third of pregnancies were aborted around a hundred years ago, when abortion was illegal, and the Comstock Laws were still in place barring access to contraception.
The other thing that stands out to me is that, okay, if we’re going to have this conversation about population replacement rates and all that jazz, conservatives somehow see returning to traditional family values as the solution. Yes, we must make women stay home and be baby factories! Except the reality is, more women *choose* to have babies when that choice does not necessarily have to equal subscribing to oppressive traditional roles. The more women are able to choose motherhood without then being forced into some 1950s sitcom, the more they are going to do so. I know that I would be more likely to have another child if our society were different in that regard. In countries with the least traditional gender roles and the most support for mothers, the population continues to grow at a healthier rate. Imagine that…
